Professor Lord is a group leader in the  Medical Research Council Centre for Immune Regulation, based in the medical school
at the University of Birmingham. The MRC Centre was given centre of excellence status 10 years ago and this has recently been renewed for another 5 years. The Centre researches the basic regulation of immunity and how this breaks down in chronic inflammatory disease, autoimmune disease and cancer. More recently the Centre has adopted two new themes, namely
Chemokine Biology and Ageing of the Immune System. The latter is directed  by  Professor Lord who is also director of the Centre for Healthy Ageing  Research at the University. The University of Birmingham itself is a research intensive university located in the UK's second city and is ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide (position 64 in 2009).

Professor Lord and her team focus upon characterising signaling pathways that regulate immune cell function, with a special interest in the bactericidal processes and survival of neutrophils. This knowledge is used to develop novel therapies in three main areas; Immune senescence (loss of immune function with ageing), chronic inflammatory disease (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.
